Buddhist Nun to deliver two public lectures

On June 15 at 16:00 at Budakoda in Tallinn (Luha 1) a professor of Theology and Religious Studies, Karma Lekshe Tsomo will give a public lecture “Buddhism, Bioethics and Death” and on Monday, June 17 at 16:15 at the University of Tartu (Ülikooli 16, room 214) she will give a lecture entitled "Global Exchange: Buddhist Transnationalism”.

Buddhist texts have much to say about death and how to prepare for it. But the texts offer no simple answers to the dilemmas raised by contemporary biomedical technologies. An exploration of these complex questions from a cross-cultural perspective will be of interest not only to philosophers and religious practitioners, but also to social workers, hospice workers, health professionals, and caregivers in the increasingly multicultural global community.

"Global Exchange: Buddhist Transnationalism"

The history of Buddhism is a story of tradition and continual adaptation. Earlier transmissions – from India to China, Japan, Tibet, and Vietnam, for example – took hundreds of years. Today the process of transmission is faster, due to new technologies, but also more complex. This talk will illustrate some of the contributions and challenges of the current global transmission of Buddhist thought and culture.
