Inspiring talks at talk event "Bridging Cultures"

12th of December at Tartu Centre for Creative Industries, Kalevi 17, Tartu

Are we capable of changing ourselves when we find out that the world is different from our usual perception? Are concrete objects seen by the different people as the same? Cultural differences – what does it mean? How do you understand the word taste?

The event “Bridging Cultures” brings together representatives of different disciplines, who will perform with their inspiring talks. The event is moderated by the lecturer of the European College of University of Tartu Dr. Stefano Braghiroli.

MARGUS RIIMAA "Cultural Differences From a Pianist´s Perspective"


Margus is primarily engaged with creating beautiful sounds as he holds bachelor’s degree from the Estonia Academy of Music and Theatre. He has studied in Germany and United States of America where he did his master’s degree. Currently he is working as a concertmaster at Vanemuine, the national theatre of Estonia. Margus has performed with piano around the world including USA and Italy and 2008 he was awarded with third place at the international “Pietro Argento” competition in the chamber music category.

EDA AHI "Who is afraid of Estonian Russian literature?"


In Estonia Eda probably doesn’t need any introduction to the ones who are interested in poetry. Some have said that her sophisticated style and rhythm continues the path of other famous Estonian poets but in the same time she still remains as unique. Her debut collection “Masked Ball” won the prestigious Betti Alver Literature contest at 2012 and her subsequent collection “Gravity” proved once again that she is modern poet with extra class.

TERJE TOOMISTU "Seeing Beauty, Sensing Gender in The Transnational World"


Terje holds double MA degrees (cum laude) in Ethnology and in Media and Communication from University of Tartu, preceded by a BA degree in economics. She has supplemented her studies in Russia, France and United States of America focusing in her PhD project to Indonesian transgender women. Among her creative works, she has co-written a novel entitled “Seven Worlds”, she is one of the authors of the independent documentary Wariazone (2011, www.wariazone.com) and she has curated an exhibition about Soviet Union-era hippies.

INDREK NIIBO "How to be a young ambassador in the desert: bridging the gap between the European and Arab culture in Oman"


Despite of his young age Indrek has already lived in three different countries, speaks six languages, has travelled as a backpacker around the Europe, has volunteered, has participated in six different international programs, managed several projects and earned money as a street musician. Over the years he have studied different cultures through his own experiences and he is also one of the hosts at the 2014 Anniversary Ball of the University of Tartu.

MARILIIS TOOMISTE


Mariliis is an extremely determined person who holds master degrees in law and philology but it didn’t stop her to take another educational challenge. In 2014 she applied to European College to start in a new master programme, European studies. Beside to this she works as legist at the Estonian Land Board and gives occasionally lectures at the University of Tartu. Otherwise she invests a large proportion of her free time to travel around the world, which all just makes you to want to listen her stories.
