Night of Museums 2014 at UT

On Saturday, May 17th Estonian museums open their doors for visitors for a night of special events and exhibitions, celebrating the Night of Museums in Estonia for the sixth year running. In 2014, the Museum Night will take place under an umbrella theme of "Stars in the Night" - or, in Estonian, Öös on tähti.

On Saturday evening from 6 pm to 11 pm, University of Tartu Museum at Toome Hill displays a one-night-only exhibition “Beauty and glamour from the museum collections”. The permanent exhibition, the recently opened medical-themed exhibition “HEAD: the world on your shoulders” and the viewing platforms on top of the Cathedral’s towers are also opened to all visitors. On Saturday the sun sets at 21:38 and all the visitors have a chance to look at the beautiful sunset over Tartu from the viewing platforms. During the evening all the younger visitors can have their faces painted in the theme of the 19th century in the Cabinet of Crazy Scientist.

The University of Tartu Art Museum focuses on the real stars at the museum night – the museums themselves. From 6 pm to 10 pm all visitors can enjoy the exhibition “The Temple of Muses” which is opened on Saturday for the last time. All through the evening museum staff introduces the museum and its exhibitions and everyone can take a glimpse of how plaster copies are made.

The Old Observatory focuses on the stars in the sky. All visitors can compare different stars in size, temperature, distance and color. All the younger visitors can spend time in the crafts room, where the theme for the night is “Stars and constellations” and everyone can make constellation models and compare the distances between different stars. At 8 pm the Old Observatory presents a movie night and shows 90-year-old fiction film “Aelita”. When the sky is clear, there will also be an observation starting from 10 pm and all the visitors can take a look at Jupiter, Mars and Saturn.

The University of Tartu Natural History Museum will be open from 6.30 to 10 pm and will display meteorites, snakes, spiders, and Madagascar cockroaches.

The Botanical Garden invites to two excursions around its greenhouses, starting at 6 and 8 pm.

The entrance to all the programmes is free.
