Scientists introduce in Tartu the possibilities of nanoscience and technology

There will be a nanoforum in Tartu on 28 and 29 November, which will focus on the newest developments in the field of nanoscience, technology and materials. An information day for application of nanoscience and technology will be organized in Tartu Ahhaa Science Centre within the framework of the forum. A Nanolab will be introduced in Tartu Science Park, where they will demonstrate the nanotechnological solutions created by the scientists of Estonian Nanotechnology Competence Centre and the University of Tartu.

Nanoscience is still a hot topic in the world of science, and the number of nanotechnological products is thriving in the market. The activities of the scientists of Estonian Nanotechnology Competence Centre and several Estonian leading research institutions and groups, including the scientist of the University of Tartu, and new cooperation possibilities for industries in the field of nanotechnology will be introduced on the information day.

Several leading scientist of ENCC, UT and other universities will make a presentation on the information day. They will speak about the capacity and cooperation possibilities of the nanotechnology field, developed during recent years, both in Tartu and in Tallinn. Visitors from Lund University, Latvian University, University of Konstanz and from other places will introduce global developments of nanotechnology and cooperation possibilities. “Among others Prof. Lars Montelius, recent Honorary Doctor of the University of Tartu from Lund University, will make a presentation speaking about the success of the synergy between science and high-tech business and cross-border cooperation based on the example of Öresund area,” spoke Ilmar Kink, Director of Estonian Nanotechnology Competence Centre, Senior Research Fellow in Material Science, about one of the main speakers. He added that Lars Montelius has been a long-term cooperation partner and supporter of the University of Tartu, who helped to lay several years ago the foundation for the development direction of nanotechnology of UT.

An official introduction event of NanoLab will be organized within the framework of the information day programme in Tartu Science Park on Friday, 29 November. NanoLab is a centre where several technologies aimed at businesses will be developed and improved by means of nanotechnological solutions in cooperation with the university and companies. “On the introduction day we will demonstrate samples of smart glass, functional materials, nanotechnological oil additives and nanostructural carbon materials, developed in cooperation with Nanotechnology Competence Centre, universities and companies, as well as clean rooms and equipment of NanoLab,” said Kink. According to Kink, NanoLab has become a very modern and high-tech study environment for carrying out practical trainings, parts of lectures but most importantly MA and PhD theses.
