Studying as a visiting student

Students at the University of Tartu can register as visiting students and attend lectures and seminars at other universities in Estonia.

Studying as a visiting student at another university will be part of the nominal period of study, no extension can be granted as a result of studying as visiting student in Estonia. You can study as a visiting student on the same terms and conditions as other students at the respective university, i.e. the rules of the host university apply. Make sure to check the deadlines and rules of applying and registering for courses, etc., with the host university before taking up studies there.

The level of teaching is mutually accepted by the universities; courses completed as a visiting student count towards the completion of the student's curriculum upon application by the student.

Students at the University of Tartu can study at the following institutions, with which the University has concluded reciprocal agreements, without paying additional tuition fee:

  • The Institute of Theology of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church
  • The Estonian University of Life Sciences
  • The Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre
  • The Estonian Academy of Arts
  • The Estonian Aviation Academy
  • Tartu Theological Seminary
  • Tallinn University of Technology
  • The University of Tallinn
  • Pallas University of Applied Sciences
  • The Estonian Military Academy
  • TTK University of Applied Sciences

If you want to become a visiting student at another Estonian university, the institution may charge a tuition fee or refuse to admit you. Sometimes they can offer other study options, for example as an external student. For more information, contact the respective university.

Before becoming a visiting student at another Estonian university, you can ask the University of Tartu to evaluate how the planned courses would fit into your UT curriculum. For that, submit a study plan to your programme manager along with an annex containing a list of the courses to be taken at the other Estonian university. The study plan must be accompanied by the syllabi of the courses to be taken at the other university.

The RPL committee of your curriculum will review the study plan within 14 days. Once you have received the approved study plan from the committee, you can enter the courses in the visiting student application. The study plan will be preserved by the faculty/college.

Once your studies as a visiting student are over, take the completed evaluation sheet (or transcript of records) to the dean’s office to prove your visiting studies and annex your study results to the study plan.

If necessary, you can make changes to the study plan, i.e. submit a new annex to the study plan. The RPL Committee will assess the changes to the study plan. According to the data in the study plan, the courses completed as a visiting student will be entered in the UT Study Information System.

If a study plan is not completed it is possible to transfer the courses through RPL. In this case there is a fee of 10 euros per credit point for transfering courses.

If you are a student of the University of Tartu and wish to study as a visiting student at another Estonian university, submit an application to the student advised of your faculty.

The application must specify the courses you want to take outside the University of Tartu and must be approved by the host university. If the host university also wants an original of the application, prepare the application in two copies or fill in the respective host university form, as well. Take the signed application to the dean’s office at your faculty.

After studying as a visiting student a transcript of records will be given from the host university.

Studying as a visiting student at another Estonian (or foreign) university is regulated by the UT Study Regulations.
