Students of the University of Tartu have made it possible to create and share photo albums even without a user account. The novel free mobile and web-based photo sharing service Groupimg (www.groupimg.com) enables one to create shared photo albums for groups, with only an email address needed for sharing.
Students at the Institute of Computer Science, University of Tartu, created a novel photo sharing application Groupimg in the framework of a software business project. “Various photo sharing environments, like Instagram, Picasa, Flickr, Dropbox, Facebook etc. provide similar options, but each environment has its own shortcomings, such as the requirement of creating an account or belonging to a social network, the lack of an option to create shared albums etc. In developing the Groupimg service, we have tried to make the sharing and exchanging of images as convenient as possible for users, turning the shortcomings of other environments into a strength of the Groupimg service,” a co-founder of Groupimg Anne Jääger says of the service.
The main advantages of Groupimg over other photo sharing services are as follows:
According to Anne Jääger, users can add photographs taken at a collective event or a trip, for example, to the album by means of the application, without needing to make any further effort to share the pictures afterwards. No user account is required for creating an album and sharing or viewing photographs – access to the album is gained through a link sent to one’s email address. “This is a good opportunity to share images with close ones who do not have social network accounts and who only use email,” says Jääger.
According to the supervisors of the course, Georg Singer and Ivo Mägi, this is the first actual result of the software business course which was launched at the University of Tartu this year and whose objective is to raise the students’ business awareness and increase the number of those who go into business after graduating from the IT field.
The Groupimg team consists of Anne Jääger, Oliver Meus, Sigmar Muuga, Roland Kriibi and Mikk Pavelson.
The Groupimg photo sharing service can be joined and the mobile application can be downloaded from the website of Groupimg. The Android application is already available at the Google Play app store.
