UT researchers Associate Professor Aleksei Kelli and Professor Kadri Ukrainski, together with partners from Ukraine, organised a seminar in Ukraine on 12 April entitled “Research Organizations and Universities Knowledge Transfer in Ukraine: The Improvement of the Policy and Mechanisms in Ukraine, based on EU Experience“.

At the conference “Fibre Optic Education”, organised by the Information Technology Foundation for Education last week, the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science’s MOOC “About Programming” was awarded the title for the best e-course of the year. This course is also among the 31 which received the e-course quality mark this year.

On 15 and 16 April 2016, the administration of the University of Turku and representatives of the Turku University Foundation, led by Rector Professor Kalervo Väänänen, visited UT. On 15 April, the guests met with members of the UT Rector’s Office and in a seminar, Rector Volli Kalm provided an overview of the university, focusing mainly on the course of the structural reform and the university’s role in Estonian research and higher education.

On Monday, 18 April 2016, Rector of the University of Helsinki Professor Jukka Kola and Professor Markku Kulmala visited Tartu to make an interim report with leaders and researchers of the University of Tartu, Estonian University of Life Sciences and Tartu Observatory on cooperation in the framework of the Estonian research roadmap object “Estonian Environmental Observatory”.

From the six works submitted, the University of Tartu chose the architectural solution called ICONICUM for the IT centre to be built on Narva road. The authors of the idea will be revealed on 19 April 2016 at 15:00 in the University Café, when the envelopes with the name cards of the winning project will be opened.

It is possible to apply for the English-taught master’s curricula at the UT Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Faculty of Social Sciences, the integrated curriculum of Medicine and the Faculty of Science and Technology’s bachelor’s curriculum Science and Technology until midnight on Friday, 15 April. Admission to the master’s curricula of the Faculty of Science and Technology has already ended.

On April 4 six public universities signed a cooperation agreement to develop the joint entrepreneurial platform ADAPTER, which will provide businesses with quick and efficient cooperation with all Estonian higher education institutions.

The fifth event in the series "Tartu - Rich in Cultures" takes place on April 7. The event will introduce the traditions, culture, and ethnic wear of Pakistan and offer a glimpse of interesting tourism and nature locations across the country.

From 7 to 9 April 2016, the 2nd Baltic Alliance for Asian Studies Conference will take place at UT, being the largest forum of scholars of Asian studies that has taken place in Estonia so far. There will be presentations by 106 researchers from 19 countries. 38 presentations are by Estonians, 16 of them from the University of Tartu.

On Wednesday, 30 March, Economic Officer of the US Embassy Nicole Johnson and economic specialist Taimi Alas visited the University of Tartu, where they wished to get an overview of the technology transfer options at UT and also specific technology offers. The meeting was a continuation of US Ambassador James D. Melville’s visit to Tartu on 29 February, when, among other things, he met UT Rector Volli Kalm.

Tartu Observatory in cooperation with the Tartu Hansa Rotary and University of Tartu Youth Academy announce that applications are now open for the summer camp Science Task Force held in July - August 2016. The Youth Development Fund of the Tartu Hansa Rotary Club will award up to five participants of the Science Task Force a 600-euro fellowship. The fellowship is meant to cover the expenses related to participation in the program, for example, the cost of food and accommodation.

The University of Tartu IEEE Student Branch is going to hold a career seminar on Thursday, Apr. 07, 16:00 - 18:00. During the seminar, as the main theme, the following successful entrepreneurs will deliver keynote speeches.

“E-voting in Estonia: Technological Diffusion and Other Developments Over Ten Years (2005–2015)”, a book published in cooperation of the University of Tartu and the Estonian National Electoral Committee, is one of a kind and analyses the changes in participation in e-elections during a ten-year period, the behavioural aspects of e-voting and its social and political impact.

The Center of IT Impact Studies (CITIS) is the only institution in Estonia which does quantitative assessment and modelling of the impact of public e-services and technology. CITIS trains e-state developers, but they also use the data from the e-state to develop new services.

The University of Tartu is the only university in the Baltic states which is represented in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016 with six subjects. Of the six UT subjects on the list, linguistics (101–150) and computer science and information systems (401–450) are new entries in high places.

Research predicts that by the year 2020, the European Union needs an additional half a million IT workers. The IT sector in Estonia and Tartu is also looking for additional workforce. On 18 March, a career day is organised at the Institute of Computer Science (Ülikooli 17) where the number of IT enterprises who will introduce their internship and career options is bigger than ever.

Students from Hokkaido University will be studying in intensive English language courses in Tartu until 19 March. The Japanese are living with host families where they can also participate in the everyday life of Estonians and practice English outside the classroom.

Driving home from work, your car informs the heating system that you will be home soon and the heating turns on, or the refrigerator recognises a missing food product and adds it to the shopping list—these are only some examples of how objects will be communicating in the future and making people’s lives more comfortable. Objects’ skill to communicate is the future direction in technology and for developing this, the University of Tartu and Telia Eesti opened Estonia’s internet of things lab.

A series of events will take place at the University of Tartu on 9-12th March, which include the opening a photo exhibition, the presentation of the novel “My name is Marytė”, a public lecture, screenings of prizewinning films and also a workshop of making the famous Lithuanian national dish cepelinai.

Representatives of the University of Cambridge’s centre for mathematical studies Cambridge Mathematics will be visiting Tartu and the University of Tartu for the first time today and tomorrow, on 7 and 8 March, to learn about the Estonian school system and the computer based statistics project led by the University of Tartu Centre for School Mathematics and Informatics.
