UT holds highest position of all times in world university ranking

University of Tartu placed 347 in the QS World University Rankings—this is the highest position an Estonian university has held since the first ranking was published in 2012.

Last year UT placed 400 in the ranking. This year UT improved its position for five of the six QS indicators, including academic reputation which improved 22 places, employer reputation which improved more than 50 places and citations per faculty which improved two places.

UT also improved its position for international student ratio. This shows that UT is becoming increasingly more international and integrates to the global higher education system.

UT Rector Professor Volli Kalm said that the national university’s all-time best position in the reputable ranking assures the increasing international competitiveness of higher education and research done at UT.

“UT’s international reputation and visibility keep improving thanks to the dedicated everyday work of our members. The greater extent of the university’s internationalisation is demonstrated by the growing numbers of international students, wider choice of English-taught curricula and UT researchers being more and more included in international projects,” said the rector and added that this position also confirms the relevance of the recent administrative and curricula reforms.

“The importance of various rankings should not be overestimated but their impact to the university’s visibility as well as the grasp of relation networks in the world is recognisable. For this I am grateful to and appreciate all members of the university whose work contributes to the university’s constant development and our increasing social impact,” stressed Kalm.

The second Estonian university in the ranking is Tallinn University of Technology which placed 601–650. Massachusetts Institute of Technology is the world’s best university according to the QS ranking for the fifth consecutive year.

QS is one of the two most important rankings of world universities. UT is the only Baltic university among the 200 best European universities, placing 181–190 (Times Higher Education 2016). THE World University Rankings placed UT 351–400 in 2015.
