Waste water study confirms an even spread of the coronavirus throughout Estonia
This week’s results of the waste water monitoring study led by the University of Tartu show that the virus has spread evenly all over Estonia. In southern Estonia, the virus amounts have somewhat decreased, while in central Estonia the number of settlements with high virus concentration has grown. The island of Hiiumaa remains free of the coronavirus.

UT computer scientists' article on the cover of the most prestigious journal
The cover of the September issue of Communications of ACM, the most prestigious journal in computer science, featured an article led by University of Tartu researchers. The article proposes steps to tackle one of the biggest challenges of the future of computer sciences and the digital world: how to manage ever-increasing data volumes and data presented as graphs.

Ambassadors visited the university in September to mark the 30th anniversary of re establishment of diplomatic relations
In September, the ambassadors of Romania, Germany and Norway visited the University of Tartu to mark the 30th anniversary of the re-establishment of international diplomatic relations. The ambassadors of Romania and Norway also opened thematic exhibitions in Tartu. The ambassador of Romania Călin Stoica paid a visit to the university on 13 September, the ambassador of Germany Christiane Constanze Hohmann on 14 September and the ambassador of Norway Else Berit Eikeland on 16 September.

Study estimates the prevalence of coronavirus antibodies in adult population
A new stage in the coronavirus prevalence study led by the University of Tartu researchers will start today. Based on the results of the study, an overview of the prevalence of coronavirus and antibodies to coronavirus in the adult population of Estonia will be given by 28 September.

To help promote vaccination in Tartu and Tartu County, on Saturday, the vaccination bus of Tartu University Hospital moves from Raatuse 22 to the city centre, next to Tartu Kaubamaja. On the bus, it is possible to get vaccinated from 10 to 16.

What matters to small children, a study explored
At an early age, children already have a set of values similar to grown-ups, the first Estonian study of this kind concluded. They fight over toys and who gets to swing. They compete and they show off. They push and they fake cry. Small children have their own reasons to fight for what matters to them, and it turns out that these reasons are not that much different from those of adults.

No changes in the amount of coronavirus in waste water
This week’s results of the waste water analysis led by the University of Tartu show that the amount of coronavirus remains stable at a high level. For several weeks already, southern Estonia stands out with the highest virus levels. Coronavirus was not found in the samples collected from Pärnu County and Hiiumaa.

Expatriate Estonian visiting professor Jaan Valsiner teaches a course on semiosis in irreversible time
In the 2021/2022 academic year, expatriate Estonian visiting professor of the University of Tartu Jaan Valsiner teaches a course “Semiosis in Irreversible Time” (FLSE.00.326). Registration to the seminars of the autumn semester is open in the Study Information System until 5 September. In his English-taught course, Valsiner focuses on the dynamics of meaning-making in irreversible time, in sign systems, nature, culture and society. Seminars take place on Fridays from 14 to 16.

In autumn, Estonian companies will get advice on the application of AI and robotics in manufacturing
On 1 October, the artificial intelligence and robotics innovation hub (AI & Robotics Estonia EDIH) will be established, which starts advising Estonian manufacturing companies on the application of artificial intelligence and robotics in product and service development. The innovation hub is supported by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications and the activities are implemented by the Estonian universities and science parks.

University of Tartu PhD student Nurlan Kerimov led by his supervisor Lecturer of Bioinformatics Kaur Alasoo developed a search engine for geneticists, which works like Google Maps: given genetic coordinates associated with a disease, it finds which gene is likely to cause the disease and in which tissue. Doctoral Thesis: Long-Term Health Problems for Victims of Violence
The doctoral thesis of the University of Tartu, which studied interpersonal violence, revealed that while physical violence is predominant among men, women are more likely to be exposed to several forms of violence at the same time. The research also analysed how violence can have long-term, sometimes lifelong negative health effects.

This week’s results of the waste water monitoring study led by the University of Tartu show a continuous increase in the amount of coronavirus. The virus level is the highest in samples collected from southern Estonia. Since last week, a notable increase has also occurred in Harju and Ida-Viru County.

Tiksu – the mascot of the University of Tartu – greeted students at the opening of the academic year
Today, at the opening of the academic year of the University of Tartu in front of the university’s main building, the mascot Tiksu met the university family for the first time. On Saturday, the new mascot was also present at the Rector’s Cup Golf Tournament. The mascot’s mission is to motivate and support students during their academic journey, increase the cohesion of the university community, support the achievement of the university’s goals, and help popularise education and research.
