Fund established with Kadri Rõuk’s legacy to advance research on the Estonian language
The University of Tartu’s endowment fund received 1.6 million euros from the bequest of expatriate Estonian Kadri Rõuk. This amount was used to establish the Rõuk Family Estonian Language Fund, which will advance and develop research on the Estonian language and teaching Estonian language and linguistics at the University of Tartu.

ERC Grant helps Velle Toll quantify the impact of anthropogenic air pollution particles on climate
University of Tartu Associate Professor in Climate Physics Velle Toll received the Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) to quantify the extent to which air pollution particles cool the Earth’s climate. The results of Toll’s work would help fill a gap in our detailed understanding of human-induced climate change and improve the accuracy of climate projections.

The role of hunting and gathering in rapid population growth will be reconsidered with support from European Research Council
As part of a European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grant project, archaeologist Mari Tõrv from the University of Tartu will study how hunter-gatherers across the Northern hemisphere achieved significant population growth and social complexity long before agriculture and cattle farming became the dominating way of life. Tõrv’s research team will contribute to the project with material analysis from the Baltic region.

On 11 November, the European Institute of Technology and Innovation (EIT) selected the consortium to lead a new Knowledge and Innovation Community in the field of water, marine and maritime sectors and ecosystems (EIT Water). Among the founding partners is the Estonian Marine Institute of the University of Tartu.
