Lundi ülikooli etnoloog peab avaliku loengu jalgrattakultuurist Lundi ja Tartu näitel

Homme, 7. oktoobril kell 14.00-15.30 peab Lundi ülikooli etnoloog Charlotte Hagström Tartu ülikooli kultuuriteaduste ja kunstide instituudis (Ülikooli 16-102) loengu „Wheels of Change. Reflections on Doing Applied Cultural Analysis at Lund University”.

Ta arutleb läbi Lundi jalgrattakultuuri uurimise rakenduslike näidete, kuidas kultuuriuurijad saavad panustada linnaplaneerimisse. Loeng on ingliskeelne ja pärast seda toimub arutelu jalgrattakultuuri arendamise võimaluste üle Tartus. Kõik ratta- ja kultuurihuvilised on oodatud!

Bicycle is not just related to doing sports or getting from the point A to B. Cycling is culture, even more – it is a variety of cultures at different times and places. 

In her lecture Charlotte Hagström uses examples from different projects on cycling cultures in order to discuss some of the similarities and differences between working with applied cultural analysis and ethnology. She reflects upon experiences and challenges that emerge from applied research projects carried out by herself and by students in Lund.

Lund is a university city of quite the same size as Tartu, but it is also a city of cyclists where inhabitants make more than 40% of their daily trips by bicycle. 

• Why is it so? What are the reasons for choosing the bicycle over the car or the bus? 
• What have city government and city planners done to support cycling as a form of transport? 
• How can cultural analysis be applied to interpret and explain problems related to cycling and contribute to practical solutions?

After the lecture participants are encouraged to share their ideas on how to make Tartu a more bicycle friendly city.

Dr. Charlotte Hagström is an associate professor in ethnology and a lecturer in ethnology and archival studies at Lund University, Sweden. She is currently working with a research project on bicycling (“Bicycling Freedom”) with the purpose to investigate the bicycle as a tool for transcending physical, spatial and cultural boundaries from 1880s to the present. Besides being a researcher and teacher in ethnology Charlotte is also the programme director as well as a course coordinator and supervisor, for the Master’s programme in Applied Cultural Analysis in Lund University (see more about MACA programme: http://maca.ac/lund/about/).
